I guess I am ignorant to the cricut world but what is the difference between linked and unlinked cartridges?

If it is linked you will not be able to link it to your Gypsy because it has already been stored. You can still use it to cut in your machine but you can't use it with your Gypsy. Hope that helps!

also once a cartridge is linked the person isn't suppose to sell it separate from the Gypsy after its linked. they agree to this many times before they link to the gypsy.
