Hearts & Flowers
<3 Love <3
Valentines
Now through Jan 13th

Time for another theme, and this time we will work on Valentines as well as the always needed general use cards
Lets use some more of that never ending stash. Where does it all come from? Seems like the more we use, the more we accumulate.
These are the themes most requested by the troops. Birthday, Anniversary and Thinking of You cards for children, spouses and sweethearts

If you have questions about shipping, it is best to direct it to your shipper by pm. If you just need the address you can request that info on the thread. Several of the regulars are able to answer that and other general questions, sometimes faster.
East coast .. imnchghere (Pat)
West coast & Mountain … Phyllis
Central… RGK (Renate)

PLEASE keep the embellishments limited. If it makes a lump in the envelope it is too thick. Layers are ok, but use the thinner pop dots and try to keep it to one. Also watch the sizes of buttons and brads. Skittles are discouraged and NO glitter. Stickles and other glitter glues are ok.

* * * * For those of you who are new, let me explain how this works.

We have heard from spouses and family members of our deployed soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen, how much they enjoy getting a nice card in the mail. Since there is no card shop in the neighborhood shopping center, we are the next best thing. We have been told the PX/BX/NEX run out of cards quickly and that having nice cards to send home to family is a great moral booster.

Make cards in any way that you want. All different, all the same, or a mix of both. Just leave the inside blank to give the soldiers room to write home in and include envelopes. NO stamp necessary, (soldiers get free mail when deployed.)
A2 size cards are the most efficient to package up and ship (300+ will fit in a box), however all sizes are fine and appreciated. Do what you are comfortable with and again have fun. Try not to have thick embellishments and glitter is discouraged for the safety of the troops. We are told it can get on their clothing and be seen with night vision goggles.

***NOTE there is a FAQ thread with answers in this forum. Please refer to it if you have any questions.

When you sign up you will sign up for how many you want to do 15,30,45,100. whatever # works for you. You will also tell us what time zone you are in. The time zone will tell us to whom you will ship your cards to when you are finished.

That shipper will then compile all the cards and send them to units on the ground in Iraq, Afghanistan, or other bases. Each time zone has at least 2 or 3 units (a unit is 120-160 soldiers) to ship to.

Shipping is an expense to us that all the shippers have taken on out of their own pocket. However if you want to donate a dollar or two for shipping expense overseas then we welcome that. All money donated goes to pay for shipping to the units. YOU DO NOT have to donate any money to participate in this project.

If you have any qualms or questions about what we are doing with Cards for Soldiers, please ask in the thread. There are several great ladies that help keep this going and are always around.

Thank you for joining us and for standing behind our troops.

I hope I wasn't out of line but I mailed my valentine cards to Renate on the 1st of Dec even though the challenge hadn't been posted. I just wanted them out of my house before Christmas! I don't even know how many I sent but let me tell you, I couldn't have jammed in one more card into the flat rate box! I sure got my monies worth on that. I hope Renate received them. I'm guessing there were around 50 cards from the central time zone.

Kathy, not a problem I am sure. I know that Renate has rec'd some cards and now that there is a new thread, I am sure she will mention them and maybe give amounts.

I have a full box of Valentine's(about 300) that was returned last year. I didn't know that the unit had returned home. So that box will go back out after the 1st. Phyllis, I will give you a count as soon as I am sure.

Have a great holiday everyone.

Everyone, I'll get the tally updated as soon as a few more sign ups.

Pat, I'll add those when ever you get the count.

Kathy, yes I received your cards a few days after you mailed them and was waiting for the next challenge. The pinks and reds and whites with the hearts and ribbons are so pretty. I counted 44 cards, and yes, the box was very full. I know the troops will love them too. Thank you so much.

A co-worker gave me the address of his buddy who is stationed in Afghanistan. I told him who we are and what we do. I mailed 652 cards and other goodies to the "buddy" and a few days ago my coworker sent me this email:

"I wanted to let you know that I heard from my friend in Afghanistan and he said that he did receive your boxes of Christmas cards, and that he is EXTREMELY grateful for your generosity. Actually he let me know that he 'adopted' quite a few more men than he originally anticipated under his command, so the cards will be much appreciated by many of our finest Army warfighters in Afghanistan."

My Girl Scout Troop 429 made 57 Valentine cards last month for the troops. They did a great job on the cards, of course I'm a little biased.

Renate, I will be mailing them to you Tuesday 12/13.

Central - 57

Thanks,

Janice, your cards arrived yesterday. Please tell "your girls" that their cards are awesome. I'm glad they enjoyed making them for our soldiers.
Thank you for the postage help!

Linda, your box of cards was waiting for me today when I came home from shopping. I took a quick peak, and I saw a variety of great cards. Thank you.
Thank you also for your personal card and the postage help. Both were very much appreciated.

Hello...I received a very nice letter from my coworker's "buddy". He said that the 3 boxes of Christmas cards were waiting for him when he arrived. He also found out that he inherited more soldiers than he thought, so the cards will touch many more soldiers and their families. He asked me to tell you "thank you so much for your support and thoughtfulness and to the ladies that are part of Cards for Soldiers."

The second letter I received was from the soldier attached to the medical unit. It was one of the cards we had sent, and it was signed by several enlisted and officers in her unit. The card was full of "thank you's" .

I have to tell you that these 2 letters were probably the best Christmas gifts I received. Thank you again for making the wonderful cards for our soldiers.

Renate.
