Hi everyone,

I'm very new to the cricut world and decided to buy an Expression 2. I'm still learning the machine. I've been having trouble with cutting a monkey using the create a critter cartridge. I spent HOURS trying to cut out a simple monkey! I was able to cut layers 1 and 2 and get them to layer correctly. I can't seem to figure out how to cut the baselayer. I want to use black so it shows through for the eyes and mouth. I cut a shadow layer thinking that was it, but I don't want the shadow effect. Looking in the book, it appears there is a layer called <monkey> on the left of the page. I'm' not even sure if these are layer options. I don't know how to get to this layer on the machine. If someone could please help walk me through this with step by step directions I would GREATLY appreciate it.

On your Cricut® machine, there are 50 keys for the base characters. On the overlay, these are the white keys with tiny images. If you press just one of those buttons, you will cut the base image. If you press one of the character buttons and the Shift button, you will get a different image. If you add in the feature keys, which are the six gray keys to the left of the character keys, you can access additional images.

For the base image, press just the Character Key for the monkey. In the screen shot, it is the dark blue layer. Then your next layer will fit over it without the shadow.

Here is another sample that shows the monkey with the two layers and the vine ...

I've put together a sample that I believe may help you ... the first image in this sample is a colored picture of how the monkey looks put together without the shadow (which you said you didn't want) ... each addition picture states the layering piece that was used and is identified by the color. In other words, if you are looking for what is shown as black on the colored monkey (which is the eyes and mouth), is the base layer cut in black ... the tan face, tummy and ears, is layer #1 cut in tan ... the brown section, which is the basic parts of the monkey body, arms, legs and tail, is layer #2 cut in Brown, and the last piece of the green vine the monkey is hanging from, is the Accessory key PLUS the Shift key, cut in Green.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so here you go (hope this helps) ....

NOTE: When you assemple the Money ... start with your base layer, add layer one next, then layer 2. You can accessorize with the vine if you choose, after the Monkey is assembled.

Thank you everyone for your help. I didn't realize I had a layer key highlighted all the time. That's why I could never get the base to cut. Simple solution. I learn something new every yday with this machine.
