Valentine’s Day is just a little more than a month away, and though you may feel shopped-out from Christmas still, it isn’t too early to start thinking about how you can say “I love you” to the man in your life. The big V Day can be an especially tricky day to shop for because of its romantic overtones. You can’t just buy your guy a pair of socks and think that covers it (unless it’s a really nice pair of socks). What point you’ve reached in your relationship can make shopping especially difficult. You don’t want to seem needy, but you don’t want to underwhelm him either.

Casual dating

Maybe you’ve been out on a date or two or been seeing each other off and on for a few months. Either way you aren’t sure you’re in this for the long haul but you can’t just ignore the holiday altogether. Keep your present as casual as your relationship and don’t buy a gift that costs more than $25. Cosmopolitan magazine suggested you buy “something simple but sweet, like a DVD of a movie he really liked . . . or a book by one of his favorite authors.” In the same category might be an iTunes gift card or even just a batch of cookies you baked yourself. Stay away from heart-shaped ones for now, though.

Officially in-between

So now you’re official, your friends see you as boyfriend and girlfriend, but the future is still a vast clouded plain and you’re still just getting to know each other. This stage calls for a little pricier item. You’ll want to look for something that jumps out at you as him. For instance, does he love watching movies in his pjs, eating popcorn and snuggling with you? Get him a movie watching kit complete with adult-sized footed pajamas from JumpinJammerz.com in the pattern of his favorite super hero or other icon, a box of microwave popcorn, some candy, pop, and a movie or two you know he likes. He’ll appreciate the knowledge you put time and effort into it more than he will the price tag.

Serious dating

This is the time when you’ve likely confided in each other your undying love and you know his likes, dislikes, family, and personal history pretty well. Now you might start shelling out the big bucks for things like tickets to a concert or football game. Cosmopolitan said if you go this route, “Make it an all-day thing: Tell him you’ll pick him up on Saturday afternoon and that he should bundle up. Then go ice-skating, get spiked hot chocolates after, and finish up with dinner at a cozy restaurant.”

Long term

By now you’ve exhausted all the most obvious gifts and will be looking to try something new. The sky’s the limit on what you might spend (or your credit card limit, whichever comes first) so try to come up with something that will surprise him. Maybe he’s always wanted to go sky-diving or go to cooking school. And of course, there’s the weekend getaway option to some romantic spot you’ve never been to or one where you can share good memories.
