I use Inkscape but it seems to only convert bits of the original image. For instance, I converted a jpg of the Beatles' faces and it didn't convert Paul's eyebrows or John's glasses. So weird. Anyone else have problems like this?

Thanks!

I played around with an SVG one day....I pulled it directly into CDSPACE, so I didn't have to use a middleman. It went over perfectly. Maybe your SVG will go over without using the Inkscape on it.

I think she wants to convert a Jpeg or PNG image to an SVG.

For Design Space I have been using primarily Inkscape. I normally just use my Silhouette Design Studio software and cut with my Cameo, though.

Is the purpose in doing that to make layers where no layers exist? This is the only thing I can think of off the top of my head.

If so, does that mean we could do this with our photos once PC gives us more options with our EXPLORES.....namely, PRINT then CUT?

Yeah, pretty much. Here is an example. I take a black and white coloring page in jpeg, png or gif format and convert to an SVG.

So, jscraftylady....do you tell the black and white image what colors to input in the colored picture .SVG)?

The image is just a silhouette of their faces. No layers. I tried to use mobilefish to convert the jpg to a vector, and it converted them fine but when I went to cut them with the Cricut, it said, svg file not found.'

Will have to look into Make The Cut.

Thanks for all the replies!

I downloaded this butterfly image and did a Pixel Trace in the Make the Cut. Clicked on Break - then I moved the pieces to thier own layers - colored each layer.

This is what my image looks like. I can then close the eye and cut only certain colors. I can lock layers etc. Make the cut is a great program. Also, I just want to note that you can create and design an SVG in Make the Cut and then Export your design as an SVG and then Import into Design Space and cut with your Explore. BigGrin

You can view Make the Cut video tutorials here

Did you try changing the settings in Inkscape to get a better trace? Sometimes you have to adjust the threshold, etc to pick up all the details. That's what makes Inkscape nicer than the auto-converters, you can make adjustments.

This what i do also.......... use MTC for creating and export to SVG........ I only use DeSpace as a vehicle to cut....... This way I can keep a copy of my own files on my hard drive and avoid the bugs in DeSpace and a sometimes lag.

Is DeSpace letting you do what you want to do with all of your SVGs? I have heard some complain about the files not transferring over properly (I think I have heard some rumblings to this effect).

Char------ DeSpace is missing too many important features for me to consider it design software......... I have had no problems opening SVGs, except that DeSpace defaults to 2.4 inches and ignores the artist's default size.

Ahhhh, I did have a problem with MyScrapChick files...... but i just open them in inkscape and resave them........ her files are so cute, it's worth the extra step :-)

Those don't sound like big problems and easy ones to go around.

Glad you can at least do what you want to do with them.

Design Space can import JPEGs for tracing but they have to be really clean with defined lines. I like that you can just click out the parts you don't want making it super easy in Design Space.

I use Make the Cut for complex importing and then save as an SVG. MTC for my MAC is basically useless since only their machine works with it and Studio doesn't export SVG files. I can use MTC on my laptop, but don't think about it very often.

Only gripe with importing SVGs into Design Space is that it doesn't open true to size.

So far I haven't had a cutting issues with importing SVGs. Inkscape is free but I'm not very good at it.
